The Department of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies is dedicated to the research and teaching of the literatures, cultures and languages of the Spanish and Portuguese speaking worlds.¬† We offer a full range of undergraduate courses in two majors: Latin American Studies and Spanish and Portuguese, leading to the B.A. Please see the Rice University General Announcements for current undergraduate degree requirements and course listings. Of the eight faculty currently in the department, three are originally from the United States. The rest are from Argentina, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
Our faculty are researchers and teachers with world-wide recognition. Their areas of expertise span the fields of Iberian, Latin American and U.S. Latino literature, visual media, cultural perspectives, performance studies, material culture, language acquistion, language varieties and many other topics.
The department hosts talks, special symposia, film screenings, and cultural events within the School of Humanities and across other campus units, as well as in off-campus theaters, libraries, and performance venues.
Houston is an important center for cultural production in the Spanish and Portuguese languages. The strength of our program draws on the cultural richness of the surrounding community, which is reflected in our service learning programs, and our many cultural events.
