Areas of Interest
Dr. Kauffmann retired in June 2015, having taught at Rice University since 1976. He offered courses in modern Spanish literature, art, intellectual history (esp. 1875-1939), and literary translation. His research interests include the essay as genre, Ibero-American transatlantic studies, the Spanish Republican exile, and the short fiction of Borges and Cortázar. In 2003, he founded the Global Hispanism Workshop, sponsored by the Humanities Research Center.
